Our volunteers are a vital asset to our town, so we would like to highlight those who went above and beyond for the Kutztown Community.
Robyn Underwood, Kutztown University Assistant Professor of Biology, has led the Pollinator Initiative of Kutztown Thriving. She became a part of KCP after speaking to Main Street Manager, Nancy Brooks, last fall about joining something great- then called Healthy Communities. Robyn liked the sound of it, especially after determining the pollinators would be the first initiative. Once Robyn met the other individuals involved, she was hooked! "This group is so positive and enthusiastic that I feel like I have more energy at the end of a meeting than I had at the beginning," said Robyn.
What is your favorite memory from volunteering with KCP?
"The day we planted the garden at the Welcome to Kutztown sign was quite memorable. I was following the design that Brooke Leister had created and was struggling to recognize which color was which so could get the right plants in the right places. Two young volunteers (Elena Sewall and Fiora Schnell) stepped in and became my sidekicks. We struggled together and felt extremely accomplished when the planting was finished and we had succeeded. It was a difficult task, but we got through it together."
Things you do in the community/service other than KCP?
"I visit schools to teach kids about honey bees and other insects."
What are your hobbies/pleasures in life?
"I enjoy watching birds, nature photography, and going on adventures with my family."
What is one thing that would surprise someone to learn about you?
"I am a very messy person. It takes the threat of a visitor to make me tidy my house."
Why would you invite others to volunteer for KCP?
"KCP is a forward-thinking group of positive people. If you love Kutztown, you should be part of KCP!"
